What is NARCAN?

What is NARCAN?

NARCAN, also known as Naloxone, is a medication designed to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. It is an opioid antagonist—meaning that it binds to opioid receptors and can reverse and block the effects of other opioids. It can very quickly restore normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing from heroin or prescription opioid pain medications. Examples of opioids include heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine, and morphine, and many others. Many lives have been saved by NARCAN, and is one of the few drugs available to the public with the capacity to reverse an overdose and potentially save the victim’s life. Harm Reduction Services will provide you with the life-saving medicine at no cost.
