Syringe Service Program
Our Syringe Service Program (SSP) was created to improve the overall health of people who use drugs. Our program is authorized to provide safer drug use equipment in the County of Sacramento by the California State Office of AIDS. The CDC has studied the efficacy of SSPs and found that they reduce the transmission of blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hep C and Syphilis, as well as reducing the risk of soft tissue infections and drug overdose death. The CDC has also found that there is no increase in crime in cities with SSPs and that they do, in fact, reduce the amount of syringe waste on our streets and parks. Additionally, the CDC has found that people who participate in SSPs are five times more likely to enter drug treatment than people who don't (CDC, 2019).
It is HRS' mission to provides a friendly, non-judgmental experience for people to openly and honestly discuss their drug use in a safe environment, free of stigma. All our services are free and confidential.
